High Elves army wins 2008 UK Grand Tournament! [Updated]
Stormie from the Ulthuan.net forums posted the following:
Yep, a High elf list with Star Dragon has claimed the crown for the biggest Fantasy tournament in existence. I like that his list had Lothern Seaguard in it myself

Quite a lot of Teclis lists there as well, but at the end of the day the S7 daddy won the day, sounds like he put in a great performance against some equally powerful armies to win.
So well done to him! Though I had little doubt that a High Elf list would win the GT

Check out the rest of the long discussion thread here.
If you want to cut to the chase and get to the winning army list, here it is!
Edit: I manage to find the exact details of the army list and some comments from Anthony Spiers on his army list.
Prince on Star dragon
Mounted BSB
Level 1 Scroll Caddy
2 x 10 Lothern Seaguard (one with standard)
9 Dragon Princes + standard
Lion Chariot
3 x RBTLord on star dragon vambraces, gem of courage, armour of caledor, lance
2 x 10 lothern sea guard (one inc std & war banner all with shields)
Unit of 9 dragon princes std + BSB lion std and world dragon banner
Mage level 1, 2 x scrolls
Lion chariot
3 reapers
Interestingly no Eagles!
Good event overall, some strange games and stranger opponents though, glad we kept the foreigners from claiming a white wash
6 games -
Tristam - finsihed 4th (WElves) filth !!!
Ian - finished 5th (tomb kings) chariot army
Martin - finished 8th (ogres scragg)
Bruno - finished 11th (thorek gun line) seriously wrong !!!
Jonathan - finished 18th (ogres scragg)
James - finished 118th (ogres)If anyone says drawing ogres was easy i beg you to re-consider, scragg armies with 5/6 gorgers are wrong and so so difficult to play against also accomanied by two butchers !! Look at the list above, nearly every guy i played was a great player, there was not one single easy game out there. It was maybe a favorable draw but nothing else.
The tomb kings with 5 x magical movement with dudes with flails was not easy in the slightest…. will continue in a minute..
Tough match up if you ask me…
The dwarf army did only have one flaming war machine, i had only the caddy, one RBT and the dragon left at my start of turn 3 bear in mind i went second. So the shooting did its job. Its more about hiding your dragon in terrain and making a slower approach if you want to beat a gun-line.
As for the army itself, it was not copied from anywhere neither did i read everyones comments on the codex. Decided to give it months of thought play testing indoors every single combination and working out the exact point for point efficiencies of each and every units.
Hence why i have not posted before on here. I am at heart a hardcore Dark elf player so i am well versed with elves generally, and a regular on the tournament scene. This is the first major tournament using High Elves for me, having qualified in the heats 15th with Dark Elves.
I fancied a new army, a new change and a more modern list with a few more tricks….
Oh forget about the Dark Elves, the High Elves are obviously superior!
Lothern seaguard..
my experience tells me that people seriously play core troops wrong, especially with RBT’s
Seaguard were specifically selected for the GT for the capability of fulfilling multiple roles. At tournaments you need flexibility and the facility for your list to be fluid and dynamic.
Point for point they are by far the best at 2000pts and worked wonders for me. Their key role is table quarters and as a i mentioned above RBT’s they baby sit them and offer protection against tunnelling and flying threats. (INVALUABLE)
You guys seem to be under-estimating the best units in the book (sea guard and lion chariots) Ok they die but that means the guy ain’t shooting the dragon or princes.
I play very aggressive and like to take control from turn one and force enemy moves, this army gives me protection for that crucial first manoeuvring turn. Every unit was pre-planned and had specific roles so the list worked as an army, not individuals
Read again and thanks to those who had kind comments to say. I did hope the HE community may be chuffed for me but guess I only stirred up disgust and debate
More comments form the winner soon…
BTW Congrats Anthony!
